atm attacked by earthmover

Some stories just cry out to be stolen, even though I have no dynamite and my gang is not big enough to take over the whole parking lot.

This is how to make some quick cash in Japan:

“The jobs are amazingly repetitive. In the dark of night, an excavator – or in Japanese parlance, a power shovel – is stolen and hauled by truck to the front of an atm machine, usually one installed in a bank lobby or standing free in a parking lot. There, a man with sufficient operating skills sets to demolishing it…

.. After completion, the excavator is abandoned at the site, sometimes with the engine still running, with the machine’s cash box (or the entire machine itself) being taken to a remote area where the team of pirates set about extracting their treasure.

Police reports indicate that the destruction and theft usually takes a team of three men roughly five minutes. Witnesses are usually non-existent.”

But in South Africa, the methods are more personal and less mechanised…

“Tougher gangs attacking ATMs -

, from the Times of South Africa.

Not only are attacks on ATMs on the increase, they’re becoming more violent, says a crime expert.

In the latest attack in Gauteng, a policeman was critically injured in a shoot-out with a gang of 12 bombers armed with AK47 and R5 assault rifles.

In the early hours of Friday morning the gang took control of a parking lot at Bracken City shopping centre, in Brackenhurst, south of Johannesburg.

They took about 20 people hostage before blowing up a First National Bank ATM.

“They were like a mini army. The shoot-out ensued when the police heard the explosion and came to investigate,” police spokesman Steady Nawa said.

Anthony Minnaar, of Unisa’s department of security risk management, said gangs were now more heavily armed and were using bigger explosive charges.”

    Cool. Ramraiding very very slowly.
I once worked with a man who did periodic detention with some people in jail for doing this in Australia. They’d get lengths of heavy chain and weld them to the face of the ATM, and then pull the whole machine out with a ute. Apparently these days in Australia they’re making the ATMs heavier, surrounding them with bollards, and putting in permanent-ink stainers.
    Still, very cool.
