skiting is useless
With the course I am teaching for Melbourne’s CAE on my mind, I have been thinking about blog promotion. These are the only rules I can come up with in the hunt for an audience.
1. Make sure you blog for your own pleasure.
2. Identify a community – knitting, ball bearing polishers, spider handlers, libertarian politicians, the Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster.
3. Post links to that community that reflect what interests you. They might notice, and it provides a useful snap shot for visitors of your own proclivities.
4. Participate in that community with constructive comments which do not glow with self-advertisement. Garden and encourage comments on your own site.
5. Post stuff which is knowledgeable, clear and useful. You know, stuff that people actually want to read.
6. Post regularly and do not stop.
7. Use an ‘about me’ description which is actually useful.
8. When millions of people don’t come rushing to your site, refer to 1.
The rules for personal blogging are a bit more mysterious. Some people turn out to be interesting to strangers, largely because of the tone, and the life they depict. Most people aren’t. Again, refer to 1.
